Single Disc Polishing Machine

Single Disc Polishing Machine

Product Code : EL-MTLE-10608

Quick Answer: The Single Disc Polishing Machine is a metallographic specimen preparation machine that grinds and polishes samples to a smooth, scratch-free, mirror-like finish needed for accurate qualitative and quantitative metallographic interpretation, using a single 203mm grinding/polishing disc driven via a motor spindle and friction mechanism at 150rpm or 300rpm. It includes a cooling system that prevents the specimen from overheating during pre-grinding, and runs on a 370W, AC 380V/50Hz/3-phase input.

Disc Polishing Machines are finely polished to ensure a smooth, scratch-free and mirror-like appearance that enables accurate metallographic interpretation, both qualitative & quantitative – polishing being the final stage in producing such a flat, smooth surface. They are extensively used for polishing metallography samples for microscopic observation to study various metal structures, and this machine is equipped with a cooling system that can cool down the specimen during pre-grinding so as to prevent overheating and damaging the metallographic structure.

In this machine, the drive is given to the motor spindle, which is mounted on the motor shaft through a friction mechanism. Polishing discs are fitted on the shaft and locked by a nut, and the shaft has two bearings, which are fitted into a bearing holder for smooth working.

After mounting, the specimen is wet ground to reveal the surface of the metal and is then successively ground with finer and finer abrasive media. Silicon carbide abrasive paper was the first method of grinding and is still used today, however many metallographers prefer to use a diamond grit suspension, which is dosed onto a reusable fabric pad throughout the polishing process, starting at around 9 micrometers and finishing at about one micrometer. Polishing with diamond suspension generally gives finer results than using silicon carbide papers, especially with revealing porosity, which silicon carbide paper sometimes "smear" over. After grinding the specimen, polishing is performed: the specimen is polished with a slurry of alumina, silica, or diamond on a nap less cloth to produce a scratch-free mirror finish, free from smear, drag, or pullouts and with minimal deformation remaining from the preparation process.
