What Is the Single Disc Polishing Machine Used For?

Before a metal's grain structure can be studied under a microscope, a mounted specimen has to be ground flat and then polished free of scratches and smearing. On this machine the specimen is first wet ground on silicon carbide paper, working through finer grits, with the cooling system keeping it from overheating; polishing follows on a napless cloth with a slurry of alumina, silica or diamond, or with diamond suspension dosed onto a fabric pad from around 9 micrometres down to about one micrometre. The two speeds, 150 and 300 rpm, let the operator suit the step being carried out.
