What Is the Compaction Factor Test for Concrete Workability Used For?
Very stiff mixes often show little or no slump, so the slump test cannot tell them apart; the compaction factor test separates such mixes by how far they compact when dropped under their own weight. In the laboratory the scoop and trowels are used to handle and place the fresh concrete, the rod to compact it fully, and the balance to weigh the partially compacted and the fully compacted concrete. Dividing the first weight by the second gives the compaction factor, which is reported as the workability of the mix. The standards listed are BS 1881:103 and IS 5515.
