What Are the Test Sieves Used For?

A sieve analysis finds the grading of a granular material, that is, the share of particles falling between successive sieve sizes, which governs workability, packing and the suitability of aggregates and similar materials for their intended use. The operator nests the sieves with the largest opening at the top, places a weighed sample on the top sieve and shakes the stack by hand or mechanically, then weighs the material retained on each sieve. Because the cloth meets the frame wall in a smooth transition without an epoxy bead or inside rivets, retained material can be brushed out fully between tests.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of sieves required.
  • Cloth specification — sieve cloth to ASTM E11-20 or to ISO 3310.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the sieve frames made from?
The frames are stainless steel, die stamped from 22 ga. sheet metal and polished on both the inside and the outside surfaces.

Which specifications does the sieve cloth follow?
The stainless steel sieve cloth is made to ASTM E11-20 or ISO 3310 specifications, and the standards listed for the sieves are BSS, ASTM and ISO standards.

Why are there no rivets or epoxy bead inside the frame?
Leaving out inside rivets and the epoxy bead gives a clean, smooth transition from the frame wall to the sieving surface, so no material is trapped and carried into the next test.

Is the sieve cloth marked with ink?
No. There are no ink markings on the sieve cloth, which keeps the sieving surface clean and free of anything that could rub off into a sample.

Why are the frames die stamped?
All standard frames are die stamped, so that each frame matches the next in fit and function and the sieves nest together consistently in a stack.

What information does an export enquiry need?
Send the number of sieves, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, the packing requirements and any tender reference.
