What Is the Aneroid Barometer Used For?
An aneroid barometer senses air pressure with a sealed, partly evacuated metal capsule that flexes as the outside pressure changes, the movement being carried to the pointer. Pressure readings, and especially the way they rise or fall over a few hours, help forecast short-term weather changes and are used in surface weather analysis to locate troughs, high-pressure systems and fronts. The barometer is mounted on a wall and read at regular times, with the readings logged so that the pressure tendency can be seen, while the bimetal element corrects the capsule for changes in room temperature.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of barometers required.
- Scale version — the mbar/mm Hg or the mbar/inches Hg model.
Frequently Asked Questions
What pressure range does the barometer cover?
It reads 27.75 to 31.25 in Hg, equal to 70.5 to 79.4 cm Hg or 940 to 1080 mbar, on its triple scale dial.
How close are its readings?
The accuracy is ±0.1 in Hg, which is ±0.3 cm Hg or ±3.5 mbar on the other two scales.
Does it need batteries?
No. The aneroid barometer needs no batteries or external power, so it can be left on a wall for long-term pressure monitoring.
How is temperature change compensated?
A bimetal element provides temperature compensation for the aneroid capsule, so that changes in room temperature affect the pressure reading less.
What is the case like?
The case is 6 in diameter, in solid brass and stainless steel construction, with a bezel for bulkhead mounting; the barometer is wall mountable and can be calibrated.
How can weather be forecast from it?
The pressure tendency, whether the reading is rising or falling, indicates short-term changes in the weather, and pressure readings are used in surface weather analysis to pick out troughs, high-pressure areas and fronts.
