What Is the Internal Spring Caliper Used For?

Inside calipers take the size of holes, bores and the inside of pipes or tubes, which a rule cannot measure directly. The operator opens the legs with the central nut until both curved tips just touch opposite sides of the bore, feels for the largest setting across the diameter, then withdraws the caliper and reads the distance between the tips on a rule. Because the arms are made of fairly light metal, a light touch is needed, and the result depends very much on the skill of the machinist using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an internal spring caliper used for?
It measures inside dimensions, such as the inside diameter of a pipe or tube, using outward-turned legs whose curved tips are set across the opening.

How does it differ from an outside caliper?
Inside calipers have legs that turn outward to measure internal sizes, while outside calipers measure external sizes such as the outside diameter of a tube or a piece of bar stock.

What size and style is it?
This is Style A-4, covering 0-4 in, with a length of 4 in and a weight of 2.61 ounces.

Why does it have a satin chrome finish?
The satin chrome finish makes the caliper easier to read and gives it resistance to rust in workshop use.

Does the caliper need careful handling?
Yes. Its arms are made of fairly light metal, so they can be sprung out of shape easily; a light touch is needed, and results depend on the machinist.
