What Is the Thread Pitch Gauge Used For?
Before a damaged bolt is replaced or a tap is chosen for a hole, the thread has to be identified. The user fans out the leaves and tries them against the thread one at a time until a leaf sits in the thread with no light showing between its teeth and the thread flanks; the marking on that leaf gives the pitch in millimetres for metric threads or in threads per inch for Whitworth.
