What Are the Snap Gauges Used For?
Snap gauges are used on production lines and in inspection where many identical parts must be checked against size limits faster than they could be measured. The two adjustable anvils are set, against a master or gauge blocks, to the upper and lower limits of the dimension, giving a go gap and a no go gap. The inspector passes the part, such as a shaft or pin, into the gauge: if it enters the go gap but stops at the no go gap, the outside dimension is within tolerance.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of snap gauges required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Snap Gauges used for?
They give a quick check of whether a part's outside size equals a preset dimension or lies inside predefined tolerances, working as a form of go/no go gauge.
What measuring range do they cover?
The adjustable limit snap gauge described here has a measuring range of 0 to 1 inch, set between its anvils.
What are the anvils made of?
A one piece rectangular anvil and two adjustable square anvils are all made of hardened, lapped tool steel and have large gauging surfaces.
What kind of frame is used?
The anvils are carried on a fully stabilised cast iron frame of C type, which forms the base of the adjustable limit snap gauge.
Why are two adjustable anvils fitted?
With one anvil set to the upper limit and the other to the lower limit, the gauge gives a go and a no go gap, so a part is accepted or rejected in one movement.
What details does an export enquiry need?
Give the quantity, the country of destination with the port or city, the delivery terms (FOB, CIF or other), the packing required and any tender reference.
