What Is the Pile Echo Tester Concrete Used For?
Defects such as necking, voids or major cracks can form while a cast-in-place pile is concreted, and they are hidden below ground once the pile is complete. For the test the pile head is struck lightly and the stress wave that travels down the pile and returns is recorded at the head; reflections from the toe or from a change in section are interpreted by wave equation analysis. A clean record indicates a sound pile, and the arrival time of the toe reflection gives an estimate of length, which is useful for piles under existing bridges or towers.
