What Is the Gauge Block Used For?

Gauge blocks are wrung together, slid into contact so that their lapped faces cling to each other, to make up a stack of a required length from a small number of blocks. The stack then serves as a length standard: to set micrometers, height gauges and dial indicators, to check other gauges, or to raise one roller of a sine bar when setting an angle. An 81 piece inch set allows a wide range of lengths to be combined. Blocks are handled with clean hands or gloves, wiped before wringing and returned to their case to protect the faces.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of gauge block sets required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What other names are used for gauge blocks?
They are also known as gage blocks, Johansson gauges, slip gauges or Jo blocks. Each is a block ground and lapped to a specific thickness.

How many blocks are in the set and what grade are they?
The set contains 81 rectangular blocks of Grade 0, with their nominal lengths given in inches.

What steel are the blocks made from?
They are made from high-carbon, high-chrome steel, which gives the measuring faces high hardness and wear resistance.

How is each block identified?
Each block has an identification number etched into it, and its nominal length in inches is marked in laser-etched black characters.

What does wringing mean?
Wringing is sliding two clean, lapped blocks together so that they cling to each other, allowing several blocks to be combined into a stack of the length needed.

What are gauge blocks used for?
They act as length standards: stacks are used to set and check micrometers, height gauges and dial indicators, and to set angles with a sine bar.
