Compaction Factor Test Apparatus (code EL-CTLE-10290) is an apparatus for measuring the compacting factor of fresh concrete, the ratio of the weight of partially compacted concrete to the weight of the same concrete fully compacted, as a measure of workability. Two conical hoppers are attached on a cylinder and carried on a steel frame, each hopper has a hinge for quick release, and the 55 kg unit measures 500 × 400 × 1510 mm and comes with a 16 mm × 600 mm tamping rod.

What Is the Compaction Factor Test Apparatus Used For?

The compacting factor test measures workability by letting gravity do a fixed amount of compacting work on the concrete. Fresh concrete is placed in the upper hopper, released into the lower one through its hinged opening and then dropped into the cylinder; the excess is struck off and the cylinder is weighed. The same cylinder is then filled with concrete compacted fully, by the tamping rod or by vibration, and weighed again. The net weight of the partially compacted concrete divided by that of the fully compacted concrete gives the compacting factor, and a higher value marks a more workable mix. The standards listed for it are IS 7320, BS 1881-102, ASTM C143 and AASHTO T11.

What does the compacting factor express?
